Split bills by income

Earn different amounts? Pay the same share of your income instead of half each. Enter your take-home pay and your shared bills to see what each of you should put in.

WhoSharePays each monthvs 50/50
You 60% $900.00 +$150.00
Them 40% $600.00 −$150.00

Shares are rounded to whole percentages that add up to 100. Nothing you type here is saved or sent anywhere.

How splitting by income works

Add up both take-home pays. Each person’s share of the bills is their pay divided by that total.

If you take home $3,000 a month and your partner takes home $2,000, together you have $5,000. You earn 60% of it, so you cover 60% of the bills. On $1,500 of bills that is $900 for you and $600 for them. Each of you has 70% of your pay left after bills, where a 50/50 split would leave you with 75% and them with 62.5%.

Even split or by income?

A 50/50 split is simple and works well when you earn about the same. When incomes are far apart, it can leave the lower earner with very little after bills while the higher earner barely notices. Splitting by income keeps the pressure the same on both of you. Some couples go halfway: an even split for rent, by income for everything else. The right answer is the one you both agree on.

Keeping it fair as things change

A split worked out once goes stale. Pay rises, a new job, or a bill that goes up all change the numbers. Admin Bestie keeps the split up to date from each person’s pay, shows what is due and who has paid, and keeps your own spending private.

Questions

Should we use take-home pay or salary?

Take-home pay, if you can. It is what each of you actually has to spend, after tax, pension and student loan. Two people on the same salary can take home quite different amounts.

Is splitting by income fairer than 50/50?

It depends what you both think is fair. Splitting by income means each person gives up the same proportion of their pay, so the lower earner is left with as much breathing room as the higher earner. A 50/50 split is simpler, and some couples prefer it when incomes are close.

What counts as a shared bill?

Anything you both benefit from: rent or mortgage, council tax or property tax, energy, water, internet, insurance, the food shop, and shared subscriptions. Personal spending like clothes, nights out or your own phone usually stays separate.

Can we split by income with housemates?

Yes. Enter each person’s income and the calculator works out every share. Housemates often split rent by room size instead, and bills evenly; use whichever you have agreed.

What happens when one of us gets a pay rise?

The split should move with it. Run the numbers again, or let an app keep the split up to date from your pay each month.
